New Manila was laid out in the 1920s as a district of large houses on large lots, and a good number of them are still standing behind their original walls. Redevelopment has come slowly and unevenly, so the area holds both pre-war estates and newer townhouse rows. It is quieter than the commercial districts on either side of it.
